I've been playing with various blog software for about two weeks now, all in an effort to create some kind of centralized, portable way to keep records. Some of the information could be public, but some can't be.
The Blog concept is actually a fairly nice way to keep a personal journal, as most of the software tools are fast and easy to use. There does seem to be pluses and minuses, however, and I've tried BlogSpot/Blogger, ModBlog, and Movable Type on a local server to date. I've also been using the "w.bloggar" tool as a remote client for posting messages.
To me, the perfect client would be one that is a central hub and has a copy of all the text, but could post to one or more as needed (possibly based on the "category" of message). This would allow one central copy of everything, and the posting of things that can be posted as needed. But, we'll keep looking and see how things develop. For the time being, I'll travel around between blogs to get things the way I want to.
Current blogs being maintained are:
- Public (on BlogSpot) - this one, containing public comment on news and things for friends.
- Technical (on ModBlog) - Public, but requiring registration, containing notes on technical things related to computers, radio, music, whatever.
- Business (on Movable Type) - Private, available to my corporate LAN, containing notes and things of interest to co-workers.
Some others planned include a travel log for public consumption, and SquirrelMan tracking.
